CORVALLIS, Ore. – Dr. Philip W. Mote, a national leader in analyzing
the impacts of climate change, will speak about what's predicted for
our part of the country at a lunch discussion meeting, Wednesday,
April 8th. This special event, to be held in the meeting room at the
First Presbyterian Church, is being co-sponsored by the Corvallis City
Club and the League of Women Voters. From his special expertise in climate research in the Northwest, Dr.
Mote will address the "most likely, best case, and worst case"
scenarios predicted by today's climate modeling and what that will
mean to life in the Northwest. His presentation will be followed by a
table discussion and Q&A session, in Corvallis City Club style.Dr. Mote is the new director of the Oregon Climate Change Research
Institute (OCCRI) and a professor in the College of Oceanic and
Atmospheric Sciences at Oregon State University, where the OCCRI is
located. The Oregon Climate research institute was legislatively
established in 2007 to help the state better plan for and respond to
climate change. In addition to facilitating research and providing
climate change information to Oregon decision-makers, OCCRI will
support the state's new Oregon Global Warming Commission, created last
year by Governor Ted Kulongoski.Dr. Mote comes to OSU as a leading scientist on the impacts of climate
change, including variations in Pacific Northwest and national snow
packs, sea levels, water resources, precipitation and temperatures. He
was a lead author for the fourth assessment report by the
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which received a Nobel
Prize for its efforts. This special community conversation takes place in Dr Mote's first
week of transition from his previous position as the Washington state
climatologist. Dr Mote will lead the Oregon Climate Change Research
Institute full time starting in July 2009. A press release from Oregon
State University, introducing Dr Mote can be found at
http://oregonstate.edu/dept/ncs/newsarch/2009/Jan09/mote.htmlThe talk and discussion is open to members of the public. First time
attendees, City Club, and League of Women Voter members are free;
