Are online courses the future of
higher education? As buildings rise at college campuses, including Oregon State
University, students are flocking to courses delivered via the Internet.
Companies such as Udacity, Coursera and
the Kahn Academy offer free online classes, many from
top universities. Enrollment in OSU’s Ecampus,
which offers 30 degree programs, rises annually.

Kevin Ahern teaches online courses
in biochemistry at OSU and has posted all his lectures on YouTube.
You can download his textbook for
free or take three of his courses through iTunes. At the Corvallis City Club
meeting on Nov. 11, he will discuss his experience teaching and interacting
with students online in the United States and around the world. He will
demystify the term “massive open online course” (MOOC). And he will talk about
the results. How does an online experience compare with the classroom? Is this
a realistic alternative to a bricks and mortar education?
